i somehow lose (track of) the ability to create and augment collections depending on how i authenticate.
if i use google, i the collection page displays a full list of collections and have a button to create a new one.
if i use github, on that page, only the “new” notebook button is present at the top and neither a notebook page nor the notebook listing indicates any means to add a notebook to a collection in the “…” pop-up menu.

is there something about different login references which matters?

It sounds like you have two different accounts, one with permission to edit these collections and one without. We don’t yet support multiple authentication methods for a single account, so you should choose one of these. Email support (support@observablehq.com) and we can delete one if you like.
