Hello Observable community!
As a city planner who has spent most of his professional life in New York City (without a car), I’ve been watching our new mayor’s pothole blitz strategy with excitement and curiosity. So, I dug into pothole work orders and 311 data to see what’s actually happening behind the new administration’s quality-of-life catchphrase.
TL;DR:
NYC potholes are trending down long-term , but 311 complaints keep outpacing work orders closed.
Mamdani’s first blitz holds up well against past administrations but will need to keep this pace up to come out ahead.
Geographic spread appears proportional to borough’s share of roads rather than targeted.
