Improved Search and Browser Site Search Shortcuts

Thanks to the recently added search controls, it’s now possible to create fine-tuned Chrome site search shortcuts for Observable. For example, if you wanted to create a shortcut to search notebooks from Mike Bostock, try this:

  1. Log in to Observable
  2. Navigate to the search page
  3. Enter Mike Bostock in the Creator input
  4. Copy the URL and note that the query param query is empty
  5. Follow the directions from Google, adding a %s for the query
  6. Enter the keyword and then your query in the address bar
  7. Enjoy using this quick way to search notebooks from Mike Bostock (or whatever search criteria you use)

As far as I know, there’s no similar feature in Firefox, but please let me know if you find one.

I’ve been educated! This is possible in Firefox and was apparently available there first. Similar instructions are available for Firefox, though it will require a small workaround:

  1. Log in to Observable
  2. Navigate to the search page
  3. Enter Mike Bostock in the Creator input
  4. Copy the URL and note that the query param query is empty
  5. Bookmark the page and save it in a location of your choosing
  6. Edit the bookmark to add %s for the query and a keyword
  7. Enter the keyword and then your query in the address bar
  8. Enjoy using this quick way to search notebooks from Mike Bostock (or whatever search criteria you use)
