I long to run and fiddle with mbostock’s collision avoidance code:
and other bits of d3 from the web such as this:
but when I open the files in the browser i get only a blank page.
Can anyone suggest what I might be missing?

The “redirect” part informs us that this code is considered obsolete and you should have a look at the new URL instead.
If you want to see the old block nonetheless, you can use Collision Detection by mbostock
