Editor settings feature requests

Hello,

These are some options I personally would like to see in the settings. I think they would fit well in a new “Editor” section:

  1. Scroll horizontally instead of wrapping long lines in the code editor
  2. Show line numbers in the code editor
  3. Choose your own default cell type instead of TypeScript
  4. Disable pinning of new cells by default

There may be a few more that I don’t remember right now, but these are the ones that get in my way most often.
I’d be happy to hear if others would like the same, or have other options.

Thanks!

This isn’t an editor setting per se, but it would be very helpful if the editor remembered code folding across page reloads. Since code cells defining functions don’t currently display anything, I find I have to keep all my code cells pinned for navigation, but then I fold them for page length and speed. Inevitably, I have to reload the page to “reset” things, and then I lose all my folding.

This is good feedback! In general we try to be either strongly opinionated or totally open-ended and eschew the middle ground of “a bit of customization”. But we could probably do some more…

IIRC we almost did this in 2022. I like it. What would yours be? We’ve had people internally who use notebooks just like an internal wiki and would default to Markdown. I wonder if anyone would default to SQL. JavaScript is definitely inescapably the foundation of notebooks, the general-purpose mode to which all others compile… but now we effectively have three JavaScript modes…

Yeah, I currently never use code folding for this reason.

I think we’re working on implicit inspection of top-level variables very soon. This also sounds like it’d be helped by page-wide find / minimap / table of contents?

Observable Javascript or Javascript.
