The ability to embed maps and charts directly into my pages is absolutely critical for me. I really need this functionality (runtime with JS as before). Do you know when this feature is expected to be restored? Will this be a paid feature? In the meantime, what would you recommend? Should I keep using old.observable? It would be a real shame to have to go back to the old version, especially given how much potential the new platform has.
I am currently still using the old.observable notebooks but I think it is a ticking bomb.

Yes, embeds will come back. We know a ton of users, including big customers, depend on them, so it’s a high priority. Our marketing homepage already embeds live notebooks and chats, so we’re partway there on the backend.
And yes, both JavaScript and Iframe embeds will be limited to paid plans, i.e. “Pro” or “Team” and up. We don’t wanna trap your content, of course; you can always download your notebook (using James King’s unofficial extension for now) and self-host it however you please with Notebook Kit. But live hot-linked embeds running off of Observable will start to be a paid feature, yes.
I’d keep using the old site for those notebooks for now. You could also download them and embed using Notebook Kit.
I know it’s hard when we can’t officially commit to a timeline for supporting the old version of the site. But I really wouldn’t think of it as a ticking bomb!! We are as grateful to have it as you are! We still rely on it all the time. It has an extremely long tail of features.
We just published a list of upcoming features we’re working on this quarter, including embeds, which we hope clarifies our general roadmap. And maybe the number of other things on that list helps explain why embeds are not done yet!
So this is going to be a paid feature. That’s a regression for me, but okay.
In that case, I’ll go with the download option. I can download the notebook and deploy it somewhere, for example on GitHub.
Then, can I use it as an API like before and embed a single cell? Or is that possibility gone now as well?
Sorry if these questions are naive. I’m a geographer, not a computer scientist. The old way of creating embeds was really simple.
