As noted here, our thumbnail daemon is currently quite limited. We plan on replacing it with something higher fidelity, and also allowing the author more explicit control over the choice of thumbnail images when publishing. However, I don’t have a timeline on when these improvements will ship, so in the meantime you’ll need to insert a static header image near the top of the notebook if you want explicit control over the thumbnail.
